Substitute Teacher Praying Certification

Nowadays, a substitute teacher must be a certified teacher.

Apparently, they must also be church-going Christians.

Read the whole application.

I'm... pretty sure this isn't legal. Yet.

ETA: Got this from an atheism twitter; working on confirmation that it isn't a fake. I will update when/if I get more info. What frightens me is that I won't be surprised in the least that it's true.

Lookit that. Other countries' governments go fucking insane too.

Sometimes, all I can do is shrug, and say, "Well, at least it isn't the U.S. government going batshit looneytunes and destroying civil rights this time."

First, the Irish outlawed blasphemy. I'll be curious to see how the law is applied to The Independent's response to the law.

Now, the UK's Home Office, which is clearly the "someone" in "WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?", has issued the Vetting and Barring Scheme. This means that, among others, J.K. Rowling has to register in a government database as a possible child molester.

Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
Britons ever-more-increasingly never will be slaves.

The iPod Touch, she has a name.

I knew of Apple when I was a kid, of course, and had played about with the Apple was a ][e from time to time, but *my* first Apple was the Mac. Then I had a Mac Plus... then it went wonky off-brand to the Centris there for a while, then a G4 tower, and then a laptop.

But after the laptops, they fumbled around (anyone remember the Cube?). We figured they were out of good ideas, and it looked like the years-long run of innovation were at an end.

Then:

A complete re-branding of product brought all of the faithful back to the fold, *plus* drew the attention of a large, new audience, wholly rejuvenating the entire franchise.

Her name... is Lens Flare.

iPod Touch texting? I have the confusion.

I got my shiny new iPod Touch (still needs a name, btw), and here's a thing.

My cell phone has many, many, many uses (Palm Treo smart phone), but frankly, I use it to text, and that's pretty much it. I know that I'd use the Touch far, far more, but I can't figure out if there's a way to text on it, which is the deal-breaker. I know I can send IM, but my texting is to and from my cell phone number, and obviously iPod Touch is not on a cell network.

Anyone know of tips or tricks? If I can get this going, I would mostly carry the Touch around, and buy a cheapo cell phone for voicemail purposes, which I can always check from anywhere.

And while I'm at it--if you have great iPod Touch apps to recommend, I'd appreciate. I'm mostly looking for life organization apps (calendars and the like), anything you find useful for converting / reading docs, and stuff *you* find invaluable that I may not know about, but should.

Many thanks!

Which American accent do you have?

Northeastern

This could either mean an r-less NYC or Providence accent or one from Jersey which doesn't sound the same. Just because you got this result doesn't mean you don't pronounce R's.(People in Jersey don`t call their state "Joisey" in real life)

My fannish self says "Could be fascinating, could be a trainwreck, but what matters is that it WILL be the next Big Incest Fandom, even if it never even remotely hints at that option or desire."

Because, well. Maguire. Gyllenhaal. Angst. Sex. Brothers.

In the wake of fandom's most recent discussion about warnings, I feel I should post this. I'm doing it in the very least spoilery way I possibly can for those who don't want warnings. Oh, so much freude in my schaden.

So you know that whole rambly resignation speech Palin gave, seemingly out of nowhere, and for no discernible reason?

The reason just got discerned:

This kind of abrupt resignation doesn't happen because one needs to "spend time with the family": This just in my inbox, from a source connected sometimes to CNN: "Here's a quote I got from law enforcement here in Alaska yesterday afternoon regarding Palin--"a criminal indictment is pending authorization."

Ding!

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin’s snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice’s Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few “buddies,” according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.

Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an addition $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.
Couldn'ta happened to a nicer gal dontcha know.

ETA: Is there are store, either online or in meatspace, where you can create your own magnetic poetry? Like, you give them the vocabulary, and they create the magnets? Because I so want the "Sarah Palin Resignation Speech" kit.

I think we can all agree on one lesson to come out of this Coleman vs Franken fiasco: proof positive that EVERY VOTE COUNTS. Fewer than three hundred voters decided who was elected U.S. Senator from Minnesota. Health care reform, and what you can do - insured or not.

76% of Americans want a public option in the new (supposedly) healthcare reform plan, and yet the Democrats in Congress, who are in the majority, for fuck's sake, still won't grow spines. Maybe they'll listen to us, and maybe they won't, but it sure as shit won't hurt to try to make them. Crooks and Liars explains what Bold Progressives is doing and how we can help. I did.

Write to your Senators.

Write to your House Representatives.

And again from Crooks and Liars: Don't have health care? Check out Daric Cheshire's project. Inspired by the LiveStrong wristbands that signaled support for cancer research, he's offering black wristbands with bold white lettering that says UNINSURED. Unlike the yellow LiveStrong wristbands, nobody has to have any previous knowledge of what they're for to get the message. He wants to make uninsured Americans visible to people, not just statistics in the news. Here's the direct link to his site; it's currently over bandwidth (a good sign!), so keep trying.

I don't know how much the wristbands cost, but if you can't afford one, he will send one to you for free. This guy is serious about the cause.

You don't need my permission to re-post this in your lj, or to link back here. Go for it.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen--Best Movie Ever?

Perhaps the greatest movie review of all time.

Critical consensus on Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is overwhelmingly negative. But the critics are wrong. Michael Bay used a squillion dollars and a hundred supercomputers' worth of CG for a brilliant art movie about the illusory nature of plot.

Oh, and I would warn you that there'll be spoilers in this review — except that, really, since I still have no idea what actually happened in this movie, I'm not sure how much I can spoil it.

Since the days of Un Chien Andalou and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, filmmakers have reached beyond meaning. But with this summer's biggest, loudest movie, Michael Bay takes us all the way inside Caligari's cabinet. And once you enter, you can never emerge again. I saw this movie two days ago, and I'm still living inside it. Things are exploding wherever I look, household appliances are trying to kill me, and bizarre racial stereotypes are shouting at me.
It goes on, continuing to be brilliant and painfully hilarious all the way through. Wow. Plus, I'm certain it's more entertaining than the movie.

iPod Touch - should I get it?

I'm finally buying a new laptop -- The low-end MacBook Pro. Right now, with my education "discount" ($100 off of a $1,200 machine), I can get a free iPod Touch--I pay $299, and then get a full rebate.

I have an iPod already - it's got video and 60GB of space. The video is the little screen, not the full length and width of the iPod like the Touch version--but the Touch is only 8GB. I don't play video games, so... tell me why it's worth having (besides "FREE APPLE GADGET!").

Thanks!

Huge thanks to [info]thisisbone for the tip: Amazon is having a DVD sale, and right now The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. is for sale at $39.99. The lowest price I've ever seen for this series's DVD set is $79.

Starring: Bruce Campbell, the late, great Julius Carry, Christian Clemenson, Kelly Rutherford, John Pyper-Ferguson, Billy Drago, and John Astin.

Action sci-fi western comedy! Lord Bowler! Socrates Poole! Dixie! Professor Wickwire! The Swill family! John Mutherfuckin' Bly! Pete Hutter!

COMET, THE HORSE OF WONDER!

Since my laptop was stolen, this has been the longest I've gone without a laptop since 1995. In fact, I don't think I've ever been *without* a laptop since 1995. Still, I put off buying one until after this week, which was VERY DIFFICULT, because I figured something interesting might be announced at the WWDC.

The play's name is pronounced "Waiting for GOD-ot." I saw the Gate's production of it when they toured America in the mid-90s, and met Johnny Murphy, who was playing Estragon (you might know him from The Commitments). People come, people go, people find more Yuletide ideas they'd never considered.

Tonight, The Tony Awards air on OMG DON'T RUN AWAY I KNOW YOU THINK YOU DON'T CARE BUT HANG ON A MINUTE.

Tonight at 8 (7 central), The 2009 Tony Awards air on CBS. Why is this of any interest to you unless you are a die-hard (mostly musical-) theater fan, you ask?

First of all, the evening's host is Neil Patrick Harris.

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS, PEOPLE.

For them as only know him from Dr. Horrible and/or How I Met Your Mother, NPH is a Broadway veteran (Cabaret, Proof, Assassins), and has performed in plays and musicals all over the country.

Second of all, the nominees are STUPID INSANE this year--Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini, Geoffrey Rush, and Raúl Esparza for best actor in a play, Hope Davis, Jane Fonda, Marcia Gay Harden, Janet McTeer, and Harriet Walter for best actress in a play, and it's C.J. Cregg versus Abby Bartlet when Alison Janney and Stockard Channing vie for best actress in a musical! Two more faves: John Glover is up for supporting actor in a drama, and Angela Lansbury for supporting actress.

Third of all, if you don't watch, you risk missing a performance like this one, which is where the whole Yuletide part of the subject line comes in )

So there's that. Watch The Tony Awards. NPH says there's a chance he'll sing. ;)

Thank you all for the birthday wishes!

Making this post to lj since so many people still live here (and I'm waffling on the DW thing at the moment because there's so much to learn and I'm too busy):

Thank you! Today I am a man turned forty, which was pretty much exactly like turning thirty-nine... and, if I reach back in my memory, I find all of them are the same since around twenty-five. Twenty-five is only memorable in that at twenty-five you can legally drive a truck full of dynamite.

Oh - wait, at thirty-five you can run for President. But, let's be real, it is far more likely that I will one day drive a truck full of dynamite than run for President. You have to be fucking nuts to run for President.

As my icon informs you, however, I am Still Not King--and this greatly displeases me. Must get on that pronto. It goes on the to-do list, after 1) Finish Yet More School and 2) Become Gainfully Employed.

Imagine going to your employer and giving two-weeks notice because you've accepted a position as Monarch. That would be the most awesome exit interview ever.

Anyhow, after nine depressing hours of reading and writing about No Child Left Behind and its effects on both students and teachers, I'm going to take a shower, put on my jammies, and start reading one of the awesome books [info]shrift got for me.

Trailer for Nine! Not 9, mind you, but Nine.

Trailer for Nine, brought to you by the same folks who adapted / directed / choreographed Chicago.

The trailer is awesome. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Did I mention how spectacularly, breathtakingly awesome the trailer is? You can't beat the cast acting-wise (Daniel Day-Lewis, Sophia Loren, Penélope Cruz, Dame Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, and the spectacular Marion Cotillard as Luisa). I'm pretty sure most, if not all of them, can sing. But....

He's Italian. Guido is ITALIAN. (or Otto e mezzo), the Fellini film that the musical is based on, is about an Italian film director (played by Marcello Mastroianni), his writer/director's block, and the many women in his life. When it was adapted as a musical, the title was changed to Nine, since nothing rhymes with "eight-and-a-half," and even less nothing rhymes with "otto e mezzo". In the original Broadway run in 1982, Guido was played by Raul Julia, a Puerto Rican. In the 2003 Broadway revival, Guido was played by Antonio Banderas, a Spaniard.

And now... Daniel Day-Lewis, an Englishman. Aren't there any Italian actors anymore? Should we get a guy from Sweden the next time they have a go at it?

Don't get me wrong; I love DDL, and he looks like he's going to be amazing (not that you ever hear him speak in the trailer). And Judi Dench singing "Folies Bergère"? I. Am. So. There.

But come on. BE ITALIAN. They're even using that number as the song in the trailer!

(For the curious, this is the trailer for Tim Burton's 9, which is pretty as far from Nine as you can get.)

Livejournal, Dreamwidth, and me and you and everyone we know.

I know many flisters are burned out with posts about DW--sorry.

I am tzikeh at Dreamwidth. I'm still figuring it all out, but I will most likely continue to make my posts at dreamwidth and x-post them to lj. The reason I've chosen the option to collect comments only at dw is that it's easier for me and for commenters to have them all in one place, especially when good discussions break out. Having two discrete threads means that some people will miss other people's comments or questions, I'll be back and forth, etc. I'm know that some of you don't like having to use OpenID to comment (or just won't at all). I understand your point of view, and I'm bummed, but I think, ultimately, this is going to work best for me in the long run.

Everything I post will be cross-posted to lj. And I still read my lj flist multiple times a day every day. (Er, if "constantly refreshing" counts as multiple times a day. *g*) If you are not moving to dw, and are on my flist, I am still reading your lj, and commenting.

One thing that concerns me is the people who are reading me on their dw circle and have defriended me at lj because they'll be seeing duplicate posts. If you've defriended me at lj, I can't read any locked posts you make when I read my flist. I know this is all still shaking out, and will be for a while, but I wanted to put that out there.

Now, for my two quick dw points of order:

1) If you are on dw, please comment with your dw name, even if you think I know it. Some of you are using different names on dw than you use on lj, and I haven't sorted out who's who yet. If you don't feel comfortable leaving your info in comments, please email me at tzikeh@thechicagoloop.net

2) I have five dw invites! (Yeah, yeah, so do you *g*). First five requests to tzikeh@thechicagoloop.net get 'em.

In conclusion: OMG-1701!

So - new laptop comparison. Opinions?

I need to buy a new Mac laptop., but I am going back and forth between the white casing on the right, to the 2.0 aluminum casing on the left. Part of my dithering is due to the $300 price difference, and part of it is due to not knowing that I need DDR3 memory over DDR2 memory, or 160GB storage vs. 120GB storage. (My laptop is never my main computer; I have a dual 2 GHz G5 tower at home that serves that purpose, with over 1,650 GB storage [1 TB drive, 1 300 drive, 1 200 drive, 1 150 drive].)

I mostly used my old laptop for chatting, surfing, viewing youtube and tv shows, and schoolwork. I don't have heavy-duty software on my laptop--no Final Cut, no AutoCAD, not even photoshop (though photoshop may be an option in the future).

I'm soliciting opinions: aluminum unibody, or white polycarbonate shell? Cheaper, or more 40GB more storage? Anyone have any experience with either/both of these laptops? Please keep in mind that this laptop will be doing a lot of traveling, from home to school to coffee shops to bookstores to whichever high school at which I'll be doing my 100 observation hours in the fall, and who knows where else.

Many thanks for any advice you can give me!

This post comes to you in two parts!

PART I:

One Hundred Geeks You Should Be Following On Twitter.

Includes the usual suspects (Stephen Fry, Wil Wheaton, Greg Grunberg, Neil Gaiman, Steve Wozniak, Cory Doctorow, Jonathan Coulton, Adam Savage), but also lists a bunch of cartoonists (both print and web), comic-book writers/artists, radio hosts, astronauts (tweets from space, starting today!), policy wonks, musicians, entertainment journos, coders, etc. etc. ad infinitum.

Good times!

PART II

Arkansas GOP Senate Candidate Apologizes For Calling Schumer "That Jew"

Arkansas state Sen. Kim Hendren, who is currently the only announced Republican candidate for U.S. Senator against Democratic incumbent Blanche Lincoln in 2010, has apologized for referring to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as "that Jew" at a county Republican meeting last week.

"I don't use a teleprompter and occasionally I put my foot in my mouth."
Ah yes, be sure to get your "Obama BAD!" talking point into your non-apology.

He must not have used a teleprompter when non-apologizing, either, as he went on to say that he admires Jesus, who was a Jew. He's not anti-Semitic--some of his best Saviors are Jewish!

(Oh, he also likes that Joe Lieberman fella.)

Good times!

Chicago peeps - and others who like musical theater.

The pendulum swings wildly between possible awesome and possible fail on this one, and I have no idea where it will hang in the end:

Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth have signed on as the leads of tuner The Addams Family, which has nailed down an April opening on Broadway.

Improbable Theater's Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter) will co-design and co-direct.

Show's out-of-town tryout begins perfs at Chicago's Oriental Theater in the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Nov. 13.

On Broadway, Addams begins perfs March 4 ahead of an April 8 opening at a Nederlander theater to be determined.
Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia=AWESOME. Nathan Lane as Gomez=WTF?!?! So... I will probably go, if for no other reason than the WTF factor. Though the design will *clearly* be awesome.

How you know it's the end of the semester.

My brain and I have clearly been spending some time apart these past few weeks. I opened my datebook to look at next week, and on the page for Wednesday I have written, in big block letters, "ONE PM WEDNESDAY".

I hope it wasn't important.

Shot in the dark - journal articles on inclusion? (PL 94-142)

Any educators out there who can point me to one pro and one con article on Least Restrictive Environment / Inclusion in the classroom that I can pull up in EBSCO or JSTOR? It has to be peer-reviewed, and it has to be something I can pull up and print out tonight. Search-fu is made of fail tonight. Everything I'm finding is "How to teach in an integrated classroom" and I'm all, I'M NOT THERE YET! STOP PRESSURING ME! JUST SHOW ME DATA! GRAAAR!

(Yes, I have to write a paper and study for a final tonight. Tomorrow is end of Spring semester - FREEEEEEEEEE SOOOOOOOOON)

Cracked-out post about Life and Doctor Who and casting and, oh, everything.

This is a weird post. I obviously wouldn't ever want to make fans of Life sad, so take it as read that I don't wish unhappiness on any of you. This is just my personal, selfish desire, for which there were no indications it would ever have come true anyway.

Screwy enough for you so far?

Remember, this is just my goofy-ass fantasy.

I had had hopes, putting aside the fact that it would have made the fans sad, that Life would have been canceled after last season. Because Damian Lewis would have been frakkin' awesome as the eleventh Doctor.

He can be a total dork (this is a clip from Shakespeare Retold, in which he plays Benedick, who co-hosts a morning tv news morning program with Beatrice. This is the parallel scene to her being sent to ask him to come in to dinner).

He can be terrifying (please excuse quality of clip - no idea wtf, but it's his voice).

He can sing (why this matters to me for Doctor Who? I don't know. Also again, please excuse the video, because... I have no idea what is going on or why. Maybe just close your eyes and listen).

He can switch out emotions on a dime. (More Much Ado--the post-wedding-fiasco scene with Beatrice.)

And he is hot like burning (at the center of time) )

Plus? GINGER. He always wanted to be ginger!

Instead, we have...well, don't click if you don't already know the casting for Eleven, or, er, if you like him. )

So, there you have it.

Complete with back-up signers! (not a spelling error!)

One of the best ways to learn any language is to immerse yourself in it. With American Sign Language (ASL), that's a bit more difficult to do than for the more standard spoken languages taught in schools. But if you search "ASL song" on YouTube, you'll find hundreds, if not thousands, of popular songs signed with the song as audio track. Watch just a few and you'll be able to recognize way more words than you would in the same amount of time studying vocabulary from books.

If you know Jonathan Coulton's song "First of May," I urge you to visit this YouTube video. (WARNING: NSFW if you don't have headphones, or if your co-workers know American Sign Language.)

ETA: The guy who does the video has several more signed songs--not all are Jonathan Coulton.

EATA: Holy *crap*. Marilyn Manson's This Is the New Shit in a signed/performance video performance with... well, just go watch it. The warning here is that it may freak some viewers out, but I think it's pure genius. You're not going to get signs for all the words so much as an interpretation of the song that includes ASL. But... whoa.

More on the new Sherlock Holmes movie, a.k.a "I know what I'm doing on Christmas!"

Guy Ritchie revealed to Empire that he was worried the pair, who star as Holmes and his partner Watson in the Warner Bros movie, wouldn't get along.

"Robert and Jude didn't know each other before they both signed on," said Ritchie. "So, I was a little anxious when they first met - for about a second. Within ten minutes they were like old mates."

Ritchie hailed his two stars as "super-smart, super-experienced and super-talented", adding: "They worked really well together. It turned into a movie about their chemistry."

"I knew enough about Sherlock Holmes to know that there was a lot of unchartered material," Jude Law said of the script. "I knew [Downey's casting] was going to be something exciting, and therefore the project was going to be something exciting. And as soon as I met him, we got on very well — which is a good sign — and we both agreed that we wanted to really make this a piece about the relationship between Watson and Holmes."

***

"I think the word bromance is so passé," Downey grinned. "We are two men who happen to be roommates who wrestle a lot and share a bed."

"Holmes is a badass. They're both badasses," said Downey.

O COLLEGE OF EDUCATION NO

Why is it that, every single semester, without fail (or maybe I should say FULL OF FAIL), I get a professor in the College of Ed who is racist, sexist, or senile?

Or all three?

o/ <-- not waving, but drowning
